A House of Commons committee of MPs is due to meet today to decide if the government's controversial cuts to feed-in tariffs (FiT) warrant further debate in the House of Commons before going ahead.

The committee will consider a letter co-signed by some 58 organisations and businesses, including the Solar Trade Association, calling for a rethink of government plans to slash the FiT scheme barely more than year after it was introduced.

The government is proposing to cut the subsidy rates available to solar power projects over 50kW – roughly the size of a housing association scheme – by between 38% and 70%.

Many in the solar industry have argued it is unlikely any projects of more than 50kw will be built if the tariff changes go ahead, though others have welcomed the move as a way to ensure that more financial support will be available for domestic installations.
