British Gas customers have become victims of an internet scam promising cash in exchange for personal identification documents.

Emails have been sent out on the company's behalf asking customers to provide two forms of identification in exchange for refunds on their gas and electricity bills.

British Gas says the emails have not come from the company and is in fact part of a wider email 'phishing' scam being sent to British Gas customers and even those who do not use its services.

Phishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by pretending to be an established business.

British Gas urged: "If you have received an email like the one below, please do not action the request as it is part of the recent scam."
