Several people have been injured following a suspected gas explosion in Salford, Greater Manchester.

Firefighters reportedly responded to the blast which occurred after 7am in Silver Street in Irlam.


According to local newspapers, an elderly woman – who received the most serious injury – had switched on a gas cooker to make breakfast when the explosion occurred.


Reports say four houses were destroyed after refurbishment had been carried out in one of the houses' kitchens.


Engineers from the national grid were called in to isolate the street's gas supply.


So far there have been no fatalities.


The Health & Safety Executive is investigating with Greater Manchester Police.
