New independent research published last week (16 August) by Pink Plumbers, a national brand delivered locally by qualified female plumbers, has revealed that 63% of people want to 'be their own boss'.

The research was carried out in May by OnePoll and captures responses from 2,000 UK adults. As well as revealing that almost two out of three people want to be their own boss, it shows that women have more desire to be their own boss (66%) than men (60%).

Single mother, entrepreneur and successful plumber Jo Lawrence is determined to help plumbers – especially women – to set up their own local plumbing business. Eighty-six percent of women think there should be more women working as plumbers, and 69% of men agree.

Having recognised that there is currently a gap between women completing their training in college and actually operating as plumbers, Lawrence is determined to make it easier for women wanting to go into the trade by providing them with support and confidence. As a result, she has created a new licence hybrid franchise model, which gives entrepreneurs the support they need to get started without the costs usually associated with buying a franchise.

Apart from setting up her Pink Plumbers franchise, Lawrence has also been proactive in organising a series of college roadshows across the UK, where she has been speaking to students about her own experiences as a plumber. Her aim is to inspire students to believe in becoming their own boss.

Lawrence will also be publishing a book called Hints and Tips for the Practical Plumber, designed to provide business as well as plumbing tips to help plumbers navigate through the difficulty of setting up on their own. The book will be launched in September and will be available for purchase online at Amazon.
